The GSMA recommends abolishing the income tax advance on telecommunications services

The Global Mobile Industry Association (GSMA) has proposed the phasing out of advance income tax (AIT) on telecommunications services. According to the GSMA, this will improve the affordability of mobile services and encourage the uptake of communication services in the country.
The GSMA wrote a letter to the Federal Revenue Office (FBR) and IT and telecommunications minister Aminul Haq, recommending that the AIT be reduced from 15 percent to 8 percent in the upcoming federal budget. It further emphasizes that, in addition to general taxes, mobile consumers face a heavy burden of sector-specific taxes.
It is worth noting that there is a tax of 19.5 pct. is selling mobile services and 15 pct. AIT, which makes it the highest tax in the region. Reductions in consumer taxes will undoubtedly lead to higher government tax revenues and GDP.
The GSMA has also shown that the tax contribution of the mobile sector in Pakistan remains higher than the Asian average. He added that by 2020 the total tax contribution to the mobile sector will reach Rs 170 billion, which corresponds to 38 percent of the mobile sector's revenues.
However, it is higher than the Asia-Pacific average of 24 percent and the global average of 22 percent.
The GSMA further recommended that the cash margin limit of 100 PCs on imports be lifted for telecommunications equipment.
