This is a big upgrade from the previous 100 MB upload limit. Once WhatsApp releases this new upload limit, competing applications can adjust their own upload limits. For example, Gmail currently has a upload limit of 25 MB, but Twitter is more generous with 1 GB.

These new upload limits will greatly benefit from modern smartphones, which can produce large images and videos thanks to the high number of megapixels. These files must be compressed before being sent to WhatsApp or other chat applications. The new upload limit will preserve the quality of great videos and other media.
