Summary for a New Province Sent to Federal Cabinet

Amid political unrest in the country, the Department of Justice presented a summary to the federal cabinet to create a new province.
According to the details, the ministry also prepared a draft law on the constitutional amendment entitled "Federal 26th Amendment 2022".

The proposed amendment to the constitution seeks to create a new province consisting of three departments; Multan, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan.
The bill will be submitted to parliament after approval by the Cabinet. With the consent of parliament, a new province called "Southern Punjab" will be created.

The province of South Punjab has 46 general and 10 reserve seats in the National Assembly, while its Provincial Assembly has 119 seats. Interestingly, the Punjab meeting did not adopt a resolution calling for the establishment of a new province, or the provincial ministry of law sent a similar summary to the provincial cabinet. It should be noted here that a two-thirds majority in parliament is required to amend the 1973 Constitution. In the prevailing political scenario, the incumbent federal government seems to be struggling to maintain a simple majority, especially a two-thirds majority.
